Flywheel

Introducing the latest heavy-duty flywheel rotor for Yamaha motorcycles. Designed for models such as the Yamaha YZF-R1, FZ1 and FZ8, this flywheel provides a reliable replacement for common OEM flywheel failures.

OEM flywheels use epoxy to secure the magnets to the rotor body. Over time and repeated heat cycles, the epoxy can deteriorate, allowing magnets to loosen and contact the stator. This can cause serious engine and electrical system damage.

A Heavy-Duty Flywheel to the Rescue

The RMSTATOR heavy-duty flywheel is a reliable replacement for the OEM unit and helps prevent the mechanical problems associated with flywheel failure.

Features

  • Built to OEM dimensions: Precisely sized for a direct fit.
  • Improved epoxy: Uses high-temperature epoxy designed to withstand heat and provide stronger magnet retention than the OEM material.
  • High-grade steel capping: Protects the epoxy from heat and friction. If a magnet were to detach, the steel sleeve helps contain it and prevent contact with the stator.
  • Precise balancing: Helps reduce crankshaft vibration and support engine longevity.
  • Two-year warranty: All products are tested.

Why Cheap Repairs Won't Work

Temporary repairs using stronger epoxy may restore a flywheel in the short term, but can compromise long-term performance and reliability.

  • Remaining OEM magnets: Original magnets that have not detached may still come loose over time.
  • Magnet alignment: Correct magnet alignment is critical for stator operation. Even small misalignments can significantly reduce stator efficiency.
  • Magnet spacing: Excessive epoxy or incorrect magnet spacing can affect flywheel balance, potentially causing stator contact or crankshaft damage.
  • Incorrect replacement magnets: Replacement magnets must match the original magnetic field strength. Stronger magnets can cause rapid stator failure, while weaker magnets can significantly reduce stator output.
  • Wrong epoxy properties: Epoxy not rated for sustained high temperatures can lead to serious failure.
  • Oil contamination: Unsuitable epoxy can contaminate crankcase oil and damage the engine.

For these reasons, replacing a damaged flywheel with a new heavy-duty flywheel is strongly recommended.

Before Installing the New Stator

  • Check the AC output of the stator.
  • Replace any burned or corroded connectors on the stator and regulator rectifier.
  • Check and repair any melted wiring.
  • Apply high-temperature dielectric grease to all connectors.

The stator may use a different wire colour code from the original part. All wires are installed in the correct order; do not change the wiring configuration. This stator is designed as a direct plug-in replacement. Always use thread-locking compound when securing the stator bolts. If the stator includes a pickup coil, check the air gap during installation. Adjust it as close as possible, but no less than 0.010 inches.

Flywheel Installation

Before starting the Yamaha motorcycle, adjust the air gap. Rotate the flywheel until the raised node is aligned with the pickup/pulser coil. Adjust the gap as close as possible, but no less than 0.010 inches.

Warning

Risk of electric shock. Disconnect the battery before servicing. Installation should be carried out by a qualified technician to avoid malfunction.
